Downtown Austin has a lively and diverse residential population with many distinct neighborhoods. One of the most original and hip places to live are the condos near Rainey Street. This relatively short street, immediately west of the 35 freeway is lined with old craftsman and bungalow style homes that have slowly but surely been turned into gastro pubs, restaurants and nightclubs. You'll even find a funky trailer food court there.

Bangers Sausage House & Beer Garden is one of the most popular pubs on Rainey Street. They have more than 30 home-made sausages and 100 beers on tap. The beer garden is literally a former backyard that's been transformed into a place to meet and greet friends. Lustre Pearl, the bar and club that established the street as a hub for nightlife, reopened in the spring of 2016. The original club's old bar now rests inside a refurbished old bungalow with white pine walls and now there's an upstairs patio/bar.

If you like Indian food, then visiting G'Raj Mahal Café Lounge is a must. This uniquely Austin eatery began as a food truck and became so popular the owners set up a permanent dining area and patio on the site of another old house and garage on Rainey Street. They serve traditional and western Indian dishes and welcome guests onto the large outdoor patio to listen to jazz and small ensemble groups throughout the week.

There's plenty of outdoor fun to be had nearby too. Austin's famous lakeside hike and bike trail runs right along the shore just a few blocks south of the eateries and clubs on Rainey Street. Not surprisingly, the contemporary high rise that sits on the lake there is called The Shore. This beautiful residential tower has a great location between the water and Rainey, with great views to add to the equation.

Waller Street Boathouse

Just a few blocks to the west on the lake is the newly constructed Waller Street Boathouse, which is home to the Austin Rowing Club. Recognized as one of Austin's unique venues, the Waller Street Boathouse houses Alta's Café, a deli style eatery with a lakeside terrace, craft beer, wines and cocktails. Hang out on the lake or get physical and rent a kayak or paddle-board. You'll find The Milago, another high rise condo community near Rainey Street, right around the corner.

The Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center is just a few steps from Rainey Street too. The building itself is a work of art, resting on park-like grounds fronting Lady Bird Lake. Admission and parking are free. Seventy Rainey, a new condo tower, is right across the street. It offers more amenity space per square foot than any residential high rise currently in downtown Austin.

As you can see, there are lots of reasons why people want to live in the Rainey Street District. And there's even more coming down the pike. Austin is in the midst of an extensive redevelopment plan for Waller Creek, which flows just west of Rainey Street and empties into the lake. City planners expect this project to open up acres of formerly unusable green and public space.

In anticipation of the reimagined and engineered creek, Waller Park Place, the largest privately held residential development to be built in downtown Austin, will be just one block from Rainey Street on the corner of Red River and Cesar Chavez. This massive modern complex will occupy three acres of land and will house three towers (an office building, apartment building and luxury hotel with condo residences). Rainey Street is already wonderfully "weird" and culturally diverse and it's getting better all the time.
